The old church at Madrid gives off its own warm reflective light as it sits in a thick blanket of newly fallen snow. Madrid has turned itself into a funky tie die style locale but there is reminders of its glory days as a center for the mining industry and the turquoise that was found along the aptly named turquoise road NM 14 south of Cerrillos. Sitting off by itself this old Church gives a glorious hint of its past built in a style that is found in Jesuit Churches in Europe.

With the adobe church in the background the scene has the adobe church on the left and its gloriously old willow creating a stunning frame for the scene. Below it sits an old 1938 Chevy pickup that is slowly losing its color to the weather. The old pickup is typical of rural New Mexico where what is discarded as old and worn-out is parked someplace and left. It goes with the attitude that was told me by a New Mexico native that what is there is basically apart of the land. Painting is 11 inch by 14 inch.
Sale price $500.00
Frame and additional $75.00
Sitting outside the village of Abique above the village and its Church and near the home of Georgia O'Keefe is the Morada of the Penitentes. The three crosses symbolize their deep Catholic devotion. The round ended apse end of this adobe church adds a distinctive feel that is not found in other adobe churches. The whole scene of deep white snow in the early morning light has an overpowering blue cast to it. The warmth of the slightly off white church captures that little glimmer of warmth. San Antonio is located on NM 14 which is the road to Cerrillos from Santa Fe and continues south to meet I-40 east of the Sandias. The Sandias stand between San Antonio and Albuquerque. The snow shown in the painting is a very rare occurrence today and this unusual storm covered northern New Mexico and the Santa Fe area with over a foot of snow over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Older residents said such snows were more common in their youth. Painted in oil on 12 inch by 16 inch panel.

The three quarter view of the Santuario de Chimayo, NM east of Espanola on NM 76 sitting in a shallow valley is the shrine at Chimayo. History says that a local sheepherder was tending the flock and he found a cross with the body of Christ carved in the folk Hispanic tradition and custom. He took the cross to the nearest priest in Santa Cruz to the west and left it. After his trip to Santa Cruz his flock gathered around a particular location near the stream. There he found the cross in the original location he had found it before. Thus he came to understand this is where Christ wished him to build a chapel. The current Santuario is that shrine where many people have found healing from the earth found at the Santuario's location even to this day. The Santuario is considered a holy place by many because of the many healings that have happened there. Painted on 12 inch by 16 inch panel in oil.

The village of Oia sits on the steep slopes of the caldera side of the remains of the volcano island. Distinctive blue domed churches give the island of Santorini (the Venetian name for Saint Irene for the island of the Greek Thira) its unique ambiance. It sits at the far eastern narrow part of the crescent that is the shape of the island. The gentle sloping land away from the calderas edge is used for growing grapes and pistachios in its desert like conditions. Water is stored from the winter months in cisterns and the moist Aegean air leaves moist dew on the ground that waters the plants.Painted in oil on 8 inch by 10 inch panel.

Its location near Skipton and Ikley in the West Yorkshire Dales sits 22 miles west of Harrogate which sits another 25 miles west of York. The original Priory which has been dismantled during the reign of Henry the VIII for its lead, stone, glass and timber still has a small intact structure which today is a local Anglican chapel on the Devonshire family land holdings. It sits amongst many nearby ruins such of Perceval Hall and the original Cistercian Fountain Abbey. Distinctive about Fountain Abbey is the last waterpark so popular in the 1700s with its classic and staged views. Fountain Abbey was large enough and industrious enough to start to create its own industrial level foundry. If Henry VIII hadn't had it dismantled and the Cistercian Monks removed the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution would have occurred 250 years earlier so far advanced were the monks in their technological methods.

Painted from the Rampart Range Road above Woodland Park, CO on a cold snowy March day. It is a view of Pikes Peak from the NW and shows the massive amount of adjacent uplifted mass. It is framed in a matched 19 inch by 23 inch wood frame.

The painting is of a series of crocks and ceramic pieces which are rendered in oil on canvas. The circles of all the pieces are shown in an oval view as they would appear following the mathematical laws of perspective. This very compact little adobe family chapel sits to the north of Pecos, NM up the river valley and off to the west of the Pecos flowing below. It is winter and the warmth of the adobe walls gives it a balance against the cool greens and snow of the winter season. Painted in oil on panel. I have painted this chapel also in the fall with the golden aspen coloring in the distance. It has the cold blue sky, the partially covered pines and the white snow covering which all this coolness is balanced with the warm adobe walls of the chapel. It is typical of the many family chapels that dot the New Mexico land. I saw the same approach in Greece with its abundance of little family chapels that followed the styles of the larger buildings, white walls with blue doors and trim. Painted in oil on panel. Panel size is 12 inch by 16 inch.
Price unframed is $400.00 Frame is an additional $75.00
The view is the altar end or apse end of San Jose de Gracias de las Trampas, an old charming adobe church which dates back to the beginnings of the 1700s. The chapel construction follows the customary chapel design that is found on the Indian Pueblos such as San Ildefonso and Santa Clara near Espinola and other pueblos. The King of Spain granted the descendants the right to settle in the valley in 1706 which sits in its own green valley running east and west south of the populated area around Penasco and the Picuris Indian Pueblo.
The painting depicts two Pueblo Indians riding back to their Picuirs Pueblo home to the north with their newly acquired horses.
The area is lightly populated and is mostly ranch and small farming. Las Trampas church sits on the high road NM 76 from Espanola through Las Truchas going north to the High Road to Taos.

A view in the early summer of the Maroon Bells with a little of the snow that helps define the rock strata that gives the two mountains their totally unusually distinctive look. The inspiration for this painting was when I was visiting the Santa Fe area and stopped by this local adobe chapel at Canoncito which is adjacent to I-25 which passes in front of this attractive chapel. One of the five families that help maintain the chapel had parked their F-150 pickup in front of the chapel. The tailgate was down and they were bringing into the chapel flaralettos and other decorative Christmas items along with a tree. I thought the situation would make a nice painting so I pushed the time back 100 years into the past. So it is 1900 to 1910 and since cardboard boxes were not available I had the decorative items in old wood vegetable and fruit crates. I found the labeled crates on the internet by their time period. Flaralettos are brown paper bags with sand in the bottom to hold the candle. Go to Santa Fe over Christmas and they decorate many of the building there.

The San Acacio adobe church sits all alone in Colorado's San Luis Valley. It is located west of nearby San Luis with its very old Hispanic community which settled in the area in the early 1800s. The scene is a late winter snow covering with the willows giving off their bright orangish color just before spring. The settlements were built at that time like a fort with the plaza in the center and the dwellings surrounding it. That was a defense against the Indian raids that came over the nearby pass. Eventually the U.S. set up a military post at Fort Garland which ended the regular Comanche raids. Settlements from the south could not establish themselves due to those raids. The Comanche raids ended the Pueblo at Pecos in the 1700s and all that remains are the melted adobe structures.

This is a striking family chapel named after Nuestra Senora de la Luz. it sits along the old the old Santa Fe Trail road with that road in front climbing off to the east toward Glorita Pass.. The family chapel is maintained by 5 nearby families. The chapel was built in 1811 and off to the east side there is a road back to a valley. In 1862 the 2500 man Confederate cavalry from Texas which had taken control of all of the populated areas of New Mexico had quartered their horses and supply wagons in that valley. They dismounted to meet the 500 Union soldiers following the Santa Fe Trail with the 1000 man Colorado Volunteer contingent. They met at Glorita Pass. As the battle was raging a Major Chivington with a group of his Colorado Volunteer contingent climbed up the hills to the south of the Trail and worked their way to the valley behind the Texans. They killed their horses and burned their supplies. Thus ended the Confederate take over of New Mexico. Painted on 12 inch by 16 inch panel.

This chapel sits on a family ranch in Mora County on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Range. It is totally isolated from any community and sits in this large expanse of pasture land. It looks like it is being abandoned by the ranch owners because it has one window broken out but that should not affect its standing for many years. It is made of stone and cement with a galvanized roof so it should survive the dry climate of New Mexico. Another interesting thing about the chapel is its rounded apse end where the altar is located which is not that common as a means of construction. Painted on 12 inch by 16 inch panel.

This is a striking family chapel named after Nuestra Senora de la Luz. It is located along the old Santa Fe Trail road with the road in front climbing to the left toward Glorieta Pass. One of the note of this chapel that is maintained by near by families is it was built in 1811 and in the valley nearby the Confederate cavalry had their supply wagons and horses quartered. During the Civil War 2500 Confederates met 1000 Colorado Volunteers and 500 Union soldiers from Fort Union north of Las Vegas, NM. The battle was an engagement where the Confederate dismounted cavalry attacked the line of Union soldiers and volunteers. The Union side would do a strategic retreat to set up another line that the cavalry troops would attack. It was a way of depleting the attacking forces. But the blow that won the battle for the Union side was Major Chivington of the volunteers with a group of men traveled the ridge to the south and came in and over took the Confederate wagons and burned the wagons and shot the horses. Once the cavalry commander found out this action he surrendered. So ended the Confederate effort to head for California. Their ultimate goal was also the Colorado gold fields. This occurred in 1862. Same chapel can be seen in the painting Bringing in the Christmas Trim.

Located east of Española it is on the high road that will arrive at Rancho de Taos. It is west of the Santuario de Chimayo . It sits just off the road to the south in a narrow tree bordered setting. The choosing of this multi-color wood block print was its crisp shape against the fall foliage in the background. The galvanized roof with its scarring of reddish rust also added to its striking appearance. Many of the family owned adobe chapels in New Mexico have used the galvanized roofing since it is durable, cheap and less labor intensive than the old days of thatching or wood shingling.
Image size is 6 inch high by 8 inch wide and will fit an 8 by 10 inch frame.
Sale price per print is $150.00. Framing additional
Located on the high road from Española to Rancho de Taos the las Trampas adobe church is located in a small village area of Las Trampas and was settled with the King of Spain’s permission in 1706 by 12 families. Similar churches with this mission style are found in many of the Indian Pueblos such as San Ildefonso just outside Española. It now belongs to the State of California and thus is maintained by the State. It sits on the northeast corner of the center plaza of the city. The building off on the left is also part of the mission and was the stables and shops.

The view is looking southwest with the different types of new trees growing in the foreground. It is in the height of summer and everything is vibrant and green. This view is just to the south of Estes Park next to the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

It is late enough that most of the leaves of the willows and cottonwood trees that edge along Chalk Creek have less color but some still enough to add a warm touch to this view. Chalk Creek courses down along the south of Mt. Princeton and north of Mt. Antero from Tin Cup Pass and St. Elmo up the valley. A great deal of history in this valley when railroaders attempted to tunnel through the peaks on the western edge of the valley. Not too much success because the 200 foot snow shed wasn’t even enough to keep the track clear for the train This view accents Princeton’s 14197 foot elevation.

Coming down the descending U.S. 285 that drops down from Trout Creek Pass to the northeast past these heavily weathered and rounded rock formations that sit east of the south flowing Arkansas River which eventually will flow through east Colorado, southwest part of Kansas into Oklahoma and onto and through Arkansas but here in the valley the river is a major white water rafting destination. 285 joins 24 to the east of Trout Creek Pass but split after crossing the Arkansas with U.S. 285 going south toward Santa Fe and 24 north toward Vail. It is summer full of bright greens and new grass but late enough for the snow to have departed the 14,269 foot Mt. Antero. This view is from the open area where the road 321 from Buena Vista curves around and drops steeply to the Chalk Creek Valley below Mt. Antero and Mt. Princeton. This back road view is not too commonly known and sits to the west of U.S. 285 heading south. Chalk Creek is named after the chalk cliffs on the southeast corner of Mt. Princeton and also an area with a number of hot springs that are easily visited from Denver, only 230 miles away. The mountain starts a series of mountains and peaks that hold the Ute names going south. To the north are the collegiate mountains to head toward Leadville up U.S. 24.

Behind Shavano at 14229 feet is Mt. Mt. Shavano sits above the Arkansas Valley that rests in ranchland north of Salida, CO. This is a sketch made during the most colorful part of fall when the color is brilliant. This day when the drawing was made the cattle and horses were not present near the river which at this time of year is at its lowest. In the past seeing the horses along the river reminded of seeing dozens of horses along the Rhine in Holland and northern Germany, even standing in the flowing water but there the water is warmer and the Arkansas is close to 32 degrees.

Pikes Peak along with Longs Peak were outstanding landmarks for the very earliest explorers. Pike left for the area where Colorado is to explore the region for the government newly purchased from France in the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark was also sent by Thomas Jefferson with that same mission of discovery. Pike could see Pikes Peak over a hundred miles to the east as can still be enjoyed. Pikes Peak sits at 14110 feet above the area of Colorado Springs, Fort Carson and Norad’s Cheyenne Mountain center for our national defense. The Garden of the Gods are part of Colorado Springs’ park system and are stunning and this view just reveals the attractive and unusual landscape of Colorado.

An enjoyable adventure can be had by traveling the Rampart Range Road that traverses the top of the very front wall of the Front Range from Woodland Park on the south near Pikes Peak to Colorado 67 which comes out from Sedalia , CO on U.S. 85. The views out east allow an overlook of Colorado Springs, the Air Force Academy, Monument Hill, the buttes around Larkspur and Castle Rock. But the most enjoyable view is to look south toward Pikes Peak as shown in the drawing. The view is during the winter and the higher elevations have snow, a bit lower the snow has evaporated. The view shows the large extent of Pikes Peak and the peaks that extend out to the west toward the gold mining town of Cripple Creek and Victor.

This particular drawing has some significance for myself. My wife and I were married in 1087 and spent our wedding night at her cousin’s place in Breckenridge. Quandary is just a little further south on the north side of Hoosier Pass. The view was so interesting we stopped and I made this drawing. Quandary is at 14625 feet elevation and is positioned north of the Continental Divide in the Ten Mile Range and a cluster of 4 14ers just to the south of the Divide, Lincoln, Bross, Cameron, Democrat in the Mosquito Range which also has Mt. Sherman further to the south.

It is late spring with the lower elevations greening up but at 14433 feet the snow is still lingering. Also off to the right La Plata Peak appears to reveal just how close the mountains are to each other by sight. Mt. Elbert sits south of the north south line with Mt. Massive next to it. Leadville is in this Arkansas River valley where gold and silver was king. They are mining other ore now but again to reveal how close other mountains are just to the east along the Continental Divide which is the edge of the valley sits other 14ers such as Lincoln, Bross, Cameron, Democrat. Pike’s Peak is in the distance and its 14110 foot elevation makes it stand out from the lower levels and plains to the east of the Front Range. It is late fall with just a remnant of color left. Mt Antero’s height of 14269 feet is accented even more with the glowing white of snow making it more grand and impressive. Living in Denver and having daily views of the Front Range and Pike’s Peak, Long’s Peak and Mt. Evans at 14000 feet and more is a treat to see their height increased and their attractiveness enhanced by winter’s white blanket. When the opportunity to see a peak or mountain up close covered in snow and up close is stunning. It is summer as the classic looking La Plata Peak still has a bit of snow in the highest reaches. There is a large expanse of conifer forest that descends down its northern side as shown reaching its lowest point along Lake Creek which flows from the Swatch Range and Independence Pass, an access to Aspen only available in the summer, to Twin Lakes Reservoirs south of Leadville area. La Plata Peak has an elevation of 14336 feet making it still nearly 97 feet shy of its larger and higher mountain neighbor to the north Mt Elbert at 14433 feet. It is an out of sight jewel where most visit Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, Snowmass, and Capital which are to the west of Aspen but Castle Peak is totally distinct with the rugged ridge coming off like a wing of teeth like jutting spikes going straight up which this feature makes it like a castle wall with its formidable formation. Castle Peak’s conical snow capped peak sets it apart from the features that descend from that peak. The time of year is early June so there is an abundance of snow even on the lower slopes.

It is spring time and so the patterned shirt and the hat. Every time I see someone wearing this style of head wear I am reminded of speaking to an Englishman up in the Lake District and his calling this style a “flt it”. So now I know he was meaning a flat hat. Jessie was a task to paint due to his complexion as I painted on a white panel. There was no chance to tone the panel to make the pigment cover well over the white.

Noel, the little French girl. Well actually she is from Denver but studied French and also went to the University of Denver where I met her as she fulfilled her role as student monitor. Her French story was sort of a disaster for her. She went over to Toulouse France for a year at the university but the students decided to have a strike. So she could not go to school but at least she spent her year in France. Quite an attractive young lady.

Beatrix had this long hair that when it fell had complex spiraling curves as it fell. The contrast in this small oil piece between her glowing complexion and hair and her cooler scarf which allowed her warm features to pop. Having a greenish cool background also adds to that contrasting pop.

Brandi had a blouse that was pulled down so the painting could achieve a sort of look of a transparent white laying thinly over her frame. Her hair was somewhat unraveled and was like a complement to the wavy top edging of the blouse.

I never caught the name of this girl as she posed but only for one time. It was spring and she was comfortable posing. She had long slowing hair. Painting this portrait along with the others is fascinating in how our features can be so totally unique yet all fall into the very tight rules of placement no matter the person. All people fulfill the placement rules no matter the face is tall, narrow, wide or squat.

Patrica is an outdoor lady. She runs or bikes everywhere and is in the elements no matter the time of year or weather. She is old enough to have grandchildren. I am not certain they partake in this more energetic life style she has chosen. Her hair can be windblown, her checks always rosy due to her being outside so much. A quick sketch of older model and her hair is incomplete because the pose was cut short.

I was looking at small photo images in black and white that were made in the 1860s until the 1900s. This photo of Man Packs the Eagle was taken in the late 1860s and he was an active brave of the Sioux tribe, which band was not recorded. I interpreted his face paint and buckskin jacket, peace pipe with what their colors were then but I added the trade goods cloth wrapping in blue and red as a color that most likely would have appealed to him. Blue could not be obtained with natural pigments from plants as was the custom.

From the age of White Calf the photo of him was taken about the 1880s. He strikes a pose that is so typical of the Indian and is an emblem of his heritage. I remember the Indian head nickel of old and his features and profile pose remind me of that coin. As is most of the time of these photos taken to record what is still there then and would vanish soon very little is known of the Indian posing for posterity other than perhaps name and tribe.

Yellow Buffalo Bull is decked out with feather and scarf and metal medallions around his neck. Still wearing buckskin shirt the only clue about him is his graying hair which suggests a date the photo was taken many years after his warring pursuits. The painting is an interpretation of a photo taken in 1910.

She makes her livelihood modeling which is a task since she does not drive living in Capital Hill with its dirth of parking.

When I returned from my military service in Vietnam I had this overwhelming urge to reconnect with home and all that made it home and so I picked up pencil and paper and started drawing. the earliest drawing was made in the summer of my return in April of 1969. Due to physical circumstances I carried around a pencil and paper as I went drawing around town. Also I started doing life drawing sessions to improve my artistic skills.
