Profile Look at George
George is an interesting person. He was a chemical engineer for much of his working life but then due to economic circumstances in New York City he went back and became a teacher in New Jersey. Eventually being a principal at an elementary school which looked out at the World Trade Center in New York. His school’s children had many parents lost in the 9/11 attack.

Jessie wearing His Flat Hat
It is spring time and so the patterned shirt and the hat. Every time I see someone wearing this style of head wear I am reminded of speaking to an Englishman up in the Lake District and his calling this style a “flt it”. So now I know he was meaning a flat hat. Jessie was a task to paint due to his complexion as I painted on a white panel. There was no chance to tone the panel to make the pigment cover well over the white.

Noel
Noel, the little French girl. Well actually she is from Denver but studied French and also went to the University of Denver where I met her as she fulfilled her role as student monitor. Her French story was sort of a disaster for her. She went over to Toulouse France for a year at the university but the students decided to have a strike. So she could not go to school but at least she spent her year in France. Quite an attractive young lady.

Beatrix
Beatrix had this long hair that when it fell had complex spiraling curves as it fell. The contrast in this small oil piece between her glowing complexion and hair and her cooler scarf which allowed her warm features to pop. Having a greenish cool background also adds to that contrasting pop.

Brandi
Brandi had a blouse that was pulled down so the painting could achieve a sort of look of a transparent white laying thinly over her frame. Her hair was somewhat unraveled and was like a complement to the wavy top edging of the blouse.

unknown model
I never caught the name of this girl as she posed but only for one time. It was spring and she was comfortable posing. She had long slowing hair. Painting this portrait along with the others is fascinating in how our features can be so totally unique yet all fall into the very tight rules of placement no matter the person. All people fulfill the placement rules no matter the face is tall, narrow, wide or squat.

Patricia
Patrica is an outdoor lady. She runs or bikes everywhere and is in the elements no matter the time of year or weather. She is old enough to have grandchildren. I am not certain they partake in this more energetic life style she has chosen. Her hair can be windblown, her checks always rosy due to her being outside so much. A quick sketch of older model and her hair is incomplete because the pose was cut short.

Man Packs the Eagle
I was looking at small photo images in black and white that were made in the 1860s until the 1900s. This photo of Man Packs the Eagle was taken in the late 1860s and he was an active brave of the Sioux tribe, which band was not recorded. I interpreted his face paint and buckskin jacket, peace pipe with what their colors were then but I added the trade goods cloth wrapping in blue and red as a color that most likely would have appealed to him. Blue could not be obtained with natural pigments from plants as was the custom.

White Calf-Two Guns Blackfoot Chief
From the age of White Calf the photo of him was taken about the 1880s. He strikes a pose that is so typical of the Indian and is an emblem of his heritage. I remember the Indian head nickel of old and his features and profile pose remind me of that coin. As is most of the time of these photos taken to record what is still there then and would vanish soon very little is known of the Indian posing for posterity other than perhaps name and tribe.

Yellow Buffalo Bull - Oglala Sioux
Yellow Buffalo Bull is decked out with feather and scarf and metal medallions around his neck. Still wearing buckskin shirt the only clue about him is his graying hair which suggests a date the photo was taken many years after his warring pursuits. The painting is an interpretation of a photo taken in 1910.
